Duane Hodgin, Class of 1962

Duane Hodgin is a 1962 graduate of Richmond High School. He holds three degrees from Ball State University and has a PhD from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

During his forty-three years of work in public education, he has served in various administrative and educational positions. Hodgin has written articles and authored three books on character and moral education. He has served as a speaker, consultant, and national workshop presenter as well as giving keynote addresses at various educational conferences throughout the country. Duane was responsible for coordinating his school district’s character education program, which resulted in the district receiving the National School Character Education Award in 2002.

Hodgin has also written three books profiling Indiana and Wayne County Veterans: World War II Duty, Honor, and Country: The Memories of Those Who Were There; World War II Veterans of Wayne County, Indiana: They Served During America’s Darkest and Finest Hours; and Korean and Vietnam War Veterans of Wayne County, Indiana: Forgotten Warriors Against the Odds.

He has been the recipient of various community, state, and national awards and in 1992 was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Frank O’Bannon. In 2009 he was presented with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Educational Leadership Award for his efforts in helping to develop state guidelines for school safety and security. The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township in Indianapolis, Indiana, honored him with the Key to the Township and the Superintendent’s Leadership Award in 1999.

Duane is a member of the board of directors of the Wayne County Historical Museum, the Richmond High School Alumni Association, and the Every Child Can Read program. He volunteers at Richmond High School and for the Christ Ambassador’s Inc. recreational facility.

He and his wife, Sandra Armacost Hodgin, class of 1963, live in Richmond and are the parents of Stephen Hodgin, class of 1994, and Annemarie Hodgin Chasteen, Lawrence Central High School, Indianapolis, Indiana, class of 1997.
